Police Department
Background
The Red Bank Police Department was formed when Red Bank became its own municipality in 1908. Each year a Chief of Police was appointed. The Chief would then appoint one or two Patrolman to protect the Borough of Red Bank. In 1916, because of a change in state law, the appointments of Chief and Patrolmen were made on a more permanent basis.
Over the years the Police Department has grown with the Borough of Red Bank. The population is estimated at 12,000 residents with approximately 1,000 businesses bringing the total daytime population to approximately 70,000. Today there are 40 police officers with an additional eight civilians employed by the police department. The Police Department works round the clock responding to approximately 16,000 calls a year.
Today’s police officers receive a great deal of training in the traditional subjects such as firearms, criminal law, motor vehicle law, and search and seizure. They are also knowledgeable in first aid, can operate a portable defibrillator carried in the police cars, work with computers, teach in schools, meet with community groups, discuss neighborhood problems, offer solutions, deal with Homeland Security issues, besides responding to various emergencies that arise during their shifts.
The police officer’s role is ever changing to meet the needs of the community. Presently there are several bilingual officers and two female officers employed by the police department.
The men and woman of the Red Bank Police Department will continue to work hard to make Red Bank a better place to live, visit, and do business.
