Police Department
Patrol Division
The Patrol Division is the largest section of the Red Bank Police Department. It falls under the command of Capt. Peter DeFazio. This section of the police department is primarily responsible for the patrolling of all areas of the Borough and responding to all calls for police service. It is considered the first line of defense for the protection of the residents and visitors in Red Bank. Secondary responsibility is the enforcement of the motor vehicle laws of the State of New Jersey.
The basic mode of transportation for the Patrol Division is the Ford Crown Victoria Police Car. Each of the police cars are equipped with radios for local communication on our own frequency and radios that allow conversation between the surrounding towns in case of an emergency.
The cars also have radar units to check the speeds of motor vehicles in Red Bank and issue summonses accordingly.
Additional equipment in the vehicles are the Mobile Data Computers (MDC). These allow the officer to check driver’s licenses, registration, and insurance information on a specific vehicle or individual. The MDC is also connected with the Automated Court System which automatically checks for warrants on a subject from all the Municipal Courts in New Jersey. The MDC also allows the officer to complete his reports from the police car. He does not have to come to headquarters to complete a report. He can remain on the road and in service. This feature was part of a COPS More grant the Borough had applied for and received.
Each car is also equipped with a fire extinguisher and first aid equipment including oxygen. Specific
officers are certified to use the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). This piece of equipment allows the police to deliver a controlled electronic shock to the heart when a subject is suffering from cardiac arrest caused by ventricular fibrillation. Ventricular fibrillation is an abnormal chaotic heart rhythm which prevents the heart from pumping blood.
The Bicycle Patrol has been used by the Red Bank Police Department for the past 15 years. It gives the police officer the ability to move through traffic quicker and respond to calls in a timely manner. The Bicycle Patrol also allows officers easy access through the numerous parks in Red Bank.
Traditionally, Red Bank Police has had different walking posts throughout the Borough. With so much of our society using motor vehicles, the walking posts were eliminated for a period of time. However, the walking posts have been reinstated during certain time periods in specific areas.
Traffic Safety Division
The Traffic Safety Division conducts traffic surveys, reviews accident reports, investigates hit and run accidents, and supervises all traffic related aspects of law enforcement. Capt. Darren McConnell heads the Traffic Safety Bureau. He is also responsible to train and schedule the school crossing guards employed by the Borough of Red Bank during the school year.
Internal Affairs Bureau
The Internal Affairs Bureau is operated under the command of Capt. Peter DeFazio. If there is any indication of police officer wrongdoing it needs to be reported. Reports can be made anonymously or in person. Each report will be investigated to a conclusion.
