NEW YORK: Mayor Pasquale Menna of Red Bank was included in a meeting and reception with 1000 Italian American leaders from the tri-state area from all walks of life who gathered in New York City to welcome The Hon. Gianfranco Fini, President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies; the equivalent of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. President Fini is in the United States on an official visit. Menna joined Governors David Patterson and Mario Cuomo of New York, numerous Ambassadors and Consuls Generals, and Mayor David Dinkins, among others. President Fini is the third highest constitutional officer in Italy.

President Fini stressed the close bilateral relations between Italy and the United States. In addition, he paid a moving, eloquent tribute to the “greatest generation”; those men and women who sacrificed life and health to liberate Italy and Europe from the clutches of the nightmare of Nazi and Fascist dictatorships in World War II. He said many lie in eternal repose in Italy and that Italians remember their sacrifice and that of the United States with great affection.

He reminded us that Italian service men and women stand alongside American forces today in Afghanistan and have also paid the supreme sacrifice in our joint action against international terrorism.
