The Red Bank Historic Design Guidelines provide clear, practical, and context-based direction to help property owners, architects, and contractors make informed decisions that preserve the Borough’s historic character, drawing on best practices and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards. Rather than enforcing uniformity, the guidelines offer a flexible framework that encourages design sensitive to the unique qualities of each property and district—including the commercial Broad Street Historic District and the modest Victorian Washington Street Historic District—both of which reflect Red Bank’s development and identity.
Property owners are encouraged to consult the guidelines early in their planning, and the HPC uses them when reviewing applications for Certificates of Appropriateness, considering each proposal individually and applying the guidelines as appropriate.
